Important for Indians: Research shows that Indians and South Asians have higher body fat percentage at lower BMI values compared to Western populations. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) recommends lower BMI cutoffs for Indians.
| Category | WHO (Global) | ICMR (India) |
|---|---|---|
| Underweight | < 18.5 | < 18.5 |
| Normal Weight | 18.5 – 24.9 | 18.5 – 22.9 |
| Overweight | 25 – 29.9 | 23 – 24.9 |
| Obese | ≥ 30 | ≥ 25 |
BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height (m)²
Example: Weight = 70kg, Height = 1.75m
BMI = 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.9
For height in feet/inches: Convert to meters first (1 foot = 0.3048 meters, 1 inch = 0.0254 meters)
According to ICMR guidelines, a BMI of 18.5 to 22.9 is considered normal/healthy for Indians. A BMI of 23 or above indicates overweight for Indians, which is lower than the global WHO standard of 25.
BMI uses the same formula for men and women, but women naturally have more body fat than men at the same BMI. A BMI of 18.5-24.9 is considered healthy for both, but body composition can differ.
For a 30-year-old Indian, a BMI between 18.5 and 22.9 is considered ideal according to ICMR guidelines. However, consult your doctor for personalized advice.
Yes, athletes and people with high muscle mass can have a high BMI but low body fat. BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic tool. Always consult a healthcare professional for a complete assessment.
