BMI Chart for Indians — Special Consideration

Important for Indians: Research shows that Indians and South Asians have higher body fat percentage at lower BMI values compared to Western populations. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) recommends lower BMI cutoffs for Indians.

BMI Formula — How to Calculate BMI Manually

BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height (m)²

Example: Weight = 70kg, Height = 1.75m

BMI = 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.9

For height in feet/inches: Convert to meters first (1 foot = 0.3048 meters, 1 inch = 0.0254 meters)

Limitations of BMI

  • BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat — athletes may have high BMI but low body fat
  • BMI does not account for age — older adults may have more fat at the same BMI
  • BMI does not consider where fat is stored — belly fat is more dangerous than hip fat
  • BMI may not be accurate for pregnant women or people with very short or tall stature
  • Always consult a doctor for a complete health assessment

What is the ideal BMI for a 30-year-old Indian?

For a 30-year-old Indian, a BMI between 18.5 and 22.9 is considered ideal according to ICMR guidelines. However, consult your doctor for personalized advice.
